Fado for People in Strange Lands

'Fado' [Portuguese: destiny, fate]. Fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics. Fado is usually linked to the Portuguese word 'saudade'. Saudade is a deep emotional state of nostalgic or melancholic longing for absent and beloved people and places. Fado is full of yearning, desire and homesickness. I'm often a stranger in strange lands, even in my home town Melbourne. From Fez to Lisbon to London - this is my Fado my poetry.

Only the Poets

Lisbon is littered with livraria.

Through an alley

under an arch

over cobblestones

I find a Portuguese bookshop.

I ask the nice young man,

“Do you have Portuguese authors in English?”

He answers,

“No authors, only the Poets”.
